Отображение в алфавитном порядке можно получить и другим способом. Для этого нужно воспользоваться "скрытыми" или, лучше говорить, "системными" настройками, которые сведены в таблицу в файле помощи.

Нас в этом списке интересует параметр "ViewUsing/SortFieldsByName", который необходимо установить в ноль.

Is there a way to "add" countries to continents?

In your case, we can add a new map, say "United Kingdom" with division on "England", "Wales", "Scotland" and "Northern Ireland". In the same way, we can add political map of United States as well. But where we should take the data for the statistics, in "country" field or in "regional" field?! It seems without any programming this feature can not be completed... we need good solution for both ways of usage.

With my collection I have items from England, Wales, Scotland etc rather than Great Britain as a whole. When I click on the Statistics by Continent options I would like items from these countried to appear, unfortunately as they are not logged under "Great Britain" they do not.

The solution can be: use "Great Britain" value in country field, and set "England", "Wales", "Scotland" etc into "Regional" field.

Is there a way to "add" countries to continents?

Relations (such as "Preceded by", "Succeeded by", "Consist of" etc) between countries are not jet implemented but planned.

Вы подняли интересную тему. Контейнер "Юбилейные монеты" следует располагать в дереве коллекции в основной ветке "Моя коллекция". Но тут получается следующий нюанс: в данной под-ветке все контейнеры являются непосредственным хранилищем экспонатов, кроме одного пункта "Дубликаты". Контейнер "Дубликаты" – не является контейнером, содержащим собственные экспонаты, а всего лишь содержит ссылки на экспонаты из основного списка коллекции с определенной выборкой. Т.е. "Дубликаты" следует называть, как и "Юбилейные монеты", - не контейнерами, а виртуальным списками отображения, что было реализовано в каждой ветке статистики.

Таким образом, "Юбилейные монеты" остаются там, где они есть. А "Дубликаты" уходят в статистику.

Что же делать?! Можно создать свой собственный контейнер "Дубликаты" и "Юбилейные монеты" и добавлять экспонаты напрямую туда. Статистика по отдельным контейнерам, естественно будет добавлена в скором будущем.

Хорошее предложение, мы продумаем как его лучше реализовать; думаю будет готово только в версии CollectionStudio 3.59 (после выхода 3.58).

Мы же создаем и развиваем наши продукты не для галочки (набор никому ненужных функций), а для живых коллекционеров, со своими требованиями и запросами, как по интерфейсу, так и функциональности. Естественно всем не угодишь, но улучшить жизнь коллекционера - мы в состоянии!

Создавая пользовательскую БД, определяя нужные мне поля, я могу выбрать, помимо их типа и названия, еще и их порядок. Тем не менее, при отображении справа (например, все заполненные поля), поля сортируются по алфавиту.

В результате, информация бессмысленно перемешивается, что-то важное теряется в середине, ненужная и техническая инфа выползает на первые строчки.

Good suggestion for small enhancement of our site, but let's do not turn our cosy site into second-grade online pages.

It will be also very good if we add usage of the filter during export: just export collectibles into external file only if they are passed filter criteria defined by user. Of course, when filter is switched off, the whole collection will be exported. as a result, we will provide in this case more export possibilities.

Вы абсолютно правы, в программе есть такая возможность для быстрого выбора частично заполненного значения в поле редактирования используя выпадающий список. К сожалению, данная функциональность была добавлена только для стандартных типов коллекций. Мы добавим эту возможность и для полей пользовательских типов коллекций. Спасибо за замечание!

Насколько я понял, сортировка списка элементов коллекции по умолчанию отсутствует. Элементы выводятся в окне в порядке, в котором они были введены в БД. Критерий этот, представляется нелогичным для пользователя, поскольку место хранения записи в БД меня, как пользователя программы, интересует меньше всего и к самой коллекции также отношения не имеет.

До создания CollectionStudio, лично я учитывал свою коллекцию банкнот и монет в простой тетради в клеточку, разленееную на несколько информационных колонок. Когда у меня возникла идея написать программу для составления статистики и соответственно полностью перейти к электронному варианту учета коллекции, то естественно за основу я взял свою тетрадь. Так и получилась, что был прошит список вывода в том порядке, как он был заполнен. Но как говориться годы идут и на месте стоят нельзя!

Да, предполагается ли (в планах) многоуровневая (хотя бы 3-х уровней) сортировка? Например, сначала по государству, потом (внутри государства) по году, потом по номиналу?

Ваше предложение очень интересно и функционально; думаю данная возможность будет востребована на все 100% процентов. Мы ее попробуем реализовать для "пользовательских типов коллекций" путем добавления дополнительного параметра к полю - параметр "уровень использования в сортировке списка по умолчанию".

I can use the tools to remove my unused countries and currencies, but when i save the program, close it an restart later, all the currenties and countries are back.

You can switch off that functionality in the "Settings" window, "Document Settings" tab.

I could create one container but please advise how can I add items to the container? It seems that I can add only new items but I'd like to add items from the collection, not new ones (didn't find any information on the website, nor on help menu).

According to our current development state we have fixed a lot of bugs and have improved several major parts of the Collection Studio. The whole implementation of containers functionality was delayed due that a lot of our users request the same fixes more and more. So, we have decided to make a new release before the finish of the containers functionality. By the way, the containers functionality is a functionality of the 4-th version of CollectionStudio! So, we have just increased the minor in the version number.

Inside CollectionStudio and its database/document format all structures are ready; we just need to expand the work with collectibles in containers, such as
- automatic movement into the trash bin;
- cut/copy/paste of collectibles between containers;
- drag and drop functionality;
- operations with wish list;
- and other automation as well.

All these functions will build the 4-th version.

No, we don't drop anything!... We just did not make new CollectionStudio releases before your suggestion/reminder. During discussions, we have agreed to make a completely new architecture of this menu. And it was already implemented via new value selector for list filter to work with huge number of different values. See attached screen shot:

Serge, could you please add also Geoogle Earth as predifined link?

Yes, it will be good, but it seems that there is no possibility to start Geoogle Earth without generation of the KLM/KMZ file; therefore we need to enhance GPS field type to support such operations (right now we have possibility to run shell command, for example open parametrized link). Furthermore, inside of the KLM file Decimal Degrees (WGS84) coordinate are used, but in GPS field you can type everything. So to run correctly Geoogle Earth, we need some mechanism to detect format/type of coordinate and convert it into WGS84 standard or into other standard according to external application demands.

It looks like, we need more work around this feature to make real solution for work with coordinates inside CollectionStudio or outside.

We have released a new version. but unfortunately, an ability to use custom country images as country flag is still in progress.

With newer version CS355 (which is released some minutes ago), we have new look of the View using tool and what is most important - a new behavior of that tool: now you can switch between collectibles in the main list using keyboard cursors and/or mouse without closing View using tool window:

One small remark though: in case of coins collections (perhaps other collections too, just didn't check them all), when accessing a specific country, one can display the list of coins from that specific country, with additional information such as (just took Poland as example): "5 Grosh, Poland (1967)" (see also your screeshot named "Statistics Europe Countries with opened list of coins from Poland".

In case of custom collections, there is only the index # displayed. It might be nice if one can also see some of the custom fields in here, but letting the user decide which ones.

For all collectible types we have special property to display complete title of the collectible - Template, which can be accessed in the Collection Option window, "General" Tab page:

For coins, the default value is:

#[index] [nominal] [currency], [country] ([year])

That's why we have the following string of the collectible displayed in the list:

"5 Grosh, Poland (1967)"

This template value is used in several parts of CS to display items:

- Various item listing (such as our "Coins from Poland" list);

- In main bar when you select the item;

- In Search tool: you can specify exactly "5 Grosh, Poland (1967)" and you will get an exact match as a result.

- etc.

I guess, many users don't know much about this feature...

For custom collectibles, you can also use this variable to expand information of the collectible. Just use your XML-tag name of your collectible fields as template fields, braced with square braces. Currently, all template names should be in lower case.

For example, if you have a field "City", CollectionStudio will automatically create for this field following properties:

1. Title: "City" - will be displayed in the "Edit" window;

2. XML-tag: "City" - will be used in export/import etc;

3. SQL-field: "CS_City" - will be used only in SQL export.

You can change them as you wish:

1. Title: "Nearest City";

2. XML-tag: "City_Tag";

3. SQL-field: "CS_CITY_NAME".

According that the default "template" for custom collectible is "#[index] [title]", you can add information about city using its xml-tag in the "template" field:

Generally, it will be very good to have a faster access on collectibles comments during browsing in the list. You are right. But we think it will be better, if CollectionStudio will have Edit dialog without modal window style, it means that you can select another collectible in the list using your mouse without closing Edit dialog, therefor you will have the same tab active on it for just selected collectible. Having this feature done, we will resolve your usability request about work with comments.

From other side, talking about a new panel with the same usability style as was implemented for Collection Tree panel, we want to enhance View Using tool. Having selected an appropriate template to show the collectible you can setup your own, special view which will fit you demands. But, also it should have non modal window style in order to easy switch between collectibles.

So, I hope, in the nearest future we will have two main modes to work with collectible:

1. Edit window - tool for convenient modification of the collectible data;

2. View Using tool - window for comfortable viewing of the collectible data (with user setup possibility using modification or creation of the new viewing templates).

For any predefined "standard" collectible type, you can track up to 5 custom field of the string type. To active this feature, please use "Options" menu-item in the main program menu. On the tab "Custom fields" you can change titles for them and active or disable them separately:

At me the offer to founders of program Dates Calculator: It would be simply remarkable, if you create on the basis of Dates Calculator the simple calculator (translator) of serial numbers of banknotes. Especially it is actual for banknotes of the Arabian countries.

Thank you for a good suggestion, for proposition of a new collectors feature. But Dates Calculator is a tool for converting dates written in some "national" format. The feature you are talking about is rather different thing - because it is just only a conversion of digits from some symbolic representation into decimal numeral system using Arabic numerals. Nevertheless it might be very interested and useful tool. We will try to create this tool in nearest feature.

1-2. In CS we don't try to create exact political/geographical maps of continent, we just wanted to visualize some interested regions in the World. In our to-do list for next visualizations: Oceania, Middle East, USA, former USSR, etc. Also, we will try to add map of Central America (it was already requested by our users). Also, we think about years of the map. The map for WW1, WW2 is different to nowadays but names of countries remain the same... Now we just accumulate the data to add it in a one scope.

Yes and no. First of all we try to create a software for really convenient usage by our users, by our collectors. You know, CollectionStudio software just a tool for them, which helps to organize all processes in collecting, in their particular hobby and even little bit more. In spite of most of our developers are collectors (such as serge is amateur of old banknotes, basil is numismatist), we still can not see and foresee all possible good ways how to best organize framework in CS for collecting for thousands of collectors. For all of them. That's why we always ask them for suggestions and for their opinions. Unfortunately there is not so much information about bills by itself.

Currently we are working on our own database of collectible information (metrics, personality, materials, scans, mint, etc). So, with CollectionStudio it will be very easy to get all info about coins, bills etc. But our first release will contain only data about coins.

it will be nice to have ability to add multiple catalogs (External #) for one stamp. Because there many different catalogs. For example:

Worldwide: Scott, Stanley Gibbons, Michel, Minkus.

Regional: Dallay (France and ex-colonies), Anfils (Spain), Brusden-White (Australia), Facit (Scandinavia), Fischer (Poland), ISC catalog (Brunei, Malaysia & Singapore), Ma (China), Sakura (Japan), Sassone (Italy), Yang (Hongkong), Yvert et Tellier (France), Zumstein (Switzerland & Europe)

Yes, same situation related to coins: Standard Catalog of World Coins aka "Krause catalog" are one of many catalogs. For example, I'm using also German "Welt Munzkatalog".

However, I know what developers will answer: use custom fields for this feature.

Yes, the fast answer will be in usage of the custom fields. But here the question is more complex than it seems. We have only 5 custom fields per "standard" collectible. In our case it is stamp or Jim's coins. But there are much more than 5 fields here in list of catalogs for stamps. I'm not sure that they all are important for tracking in collection at once. Of course such information in these possible fields will be useful - but user should decide which 5.

Another solution can be in usage of the custom collectible. With user defined collectible you can track unlimited number of fields per collectible. But disadvantage of this way will be that currently all these fields will be placed on one dialog for editing/viewing purpose. It may look terrible to scroll every time to get required info...

Yes, we need a mechanism to group custom collectible fields. But at current step of the custom collectible development we can't guarantee that division of user defined fields on several tabs (groups) will be done soon. So, the final decision should be made only by user. Of course later (when this feature will be done), there will be no difference in usability for user according selected by him way.

What about me, I'll prefer custom collectible with tracking of all possible fields in spite of how many they are. Information is a first and main part of any collection!

With our custom collectible feature it is very simple and easy to track unlimited number of items per collection. And it doesn't matter what types of zippos do you collect. With newer release of the CollectionStudio 3.51 a lot of our users have suggested many important changes for next Studio' releases by e-mails. Here I’ll mention some of their suggestions with some developers’ comments.

… In CS there are really useful features that I want. Also, I want to print or export to a format where I can see the pictures I’ve added for my collection. For example, export as HTML or something like that...

We will add this feature in next release. So it will be possible to export into HTML with or without images. (Separate options will be available in extensions filter during filename selection)

When I send to my friends a specific list of coins or print it for my private usage, I use “Print Screen” option, instead of the in-build Export tool, because it doesn’t support Russian letters in comments. It’s not so useful, it’s incontinent

Thank you very much for international support! We will continue to support different interface languages and support of foreign languages in any input, including mentioned here “Comments” field.

Could you please tell me how can I add flags images for countries that are not listed in the CollectionStudio ver. 3.50? I am talking about such countries as South Vietnam, French Indochina etc.

Unfortunately we have no such ability to use external flags for countries. But we will try to add it in a nearest future. With Image feature of the item in CS, we will add additional image types which will be used for such purposes.

I did a detailed test for custom collections that I use for tracking sands and below there are some my remarks and comments:

1. Custom fields not working at all for custom collections

Custom collection already uses a list of custom fields, so it doesn’t require any other (5 custom fields) fields which are available for "standard" collectibles.

2. Images properties: please allow more entries than “Face” and “Back” and “Face and back” for image type. One can add a new status for a current image, but this status disappears when trying to attribute it to other images”

We will check it in next release.

3. It would be nice to have country flags also for “country fields” in custom collections, as well as for contacts;

We will add them in next release.

4. It would be nice to display more info about contacts, e.g. City, Address etc.

There are a lot of fields that are inaccessible in the main list. All of them should be used in the list – it is an our main aim for next 3.52 release.

You should use "Custom collectible" option in the CS: just add all required fields in the Document option window and setup correct information on other its tabs.

So, there are several ways to work with user defined set of items (collectibles or secondary items). Some of them are implemented, some are not and other just planned:

1. Current item (single selection) – implemented.

2. Selected items (multi selection) – planned as additional usability for virtual lists (drag-and-drop etc).

3. Filtered (selection by some criteria) – in progress

4. Virtual list via container (selection by user – our Lightboxes) - planned

5. Checked items – in discussion, suggested by Jim

6. Items in current statistics view– implemented (some sort of filtering, for example View “By country”); But with this tool we can’t run any plugin, just can make export (this is we will mark as “to be implemented”).

I think there is no need to check any items, isn’t it? It is absolutely the same as “virtual list”. And from another side, in my point of view it is user friendly to work with selection. And it is also friendly to work the whole list. The third possibility will confuse users, and of course will crush convenient user interface.

So we will have following abilities:

1. Work with single item anywhere;

2. Work with the whole collection;

3. Work with a group of collectibles (Lightboxes);

3. Work with collectibles fetched by statistics criteria;

4. Work with filtered items, either in whole collection or in Lightbox or in statistics view.

I have a collection of phone cards. Is it possible to use your program for it?

Sure, you can use latest CollectionStudio 3.48 for tracking phone cards. To do this you should select "Custom collectible" option during creation of the new document in CS using "New collection" dialog. See our online help for more details how to create your own collection type and ask any questions if you will have them.

Also, in the new version (which will be release during the next week) you will have a very good possibility to import all your data from csv or xml file (of course if you have such data for example from Excel).

Also, please do not hesitate to suggest any improvements for next release for best fit of your requirements in tracking phone cards or something else.

Talking about approx. day when new version of the CollectionStudio will be available for download, say, it will be on next week, in the end of the July. Hope with such improvements you will be able to import the whole your collection with several simple mouse clicks (it's our common aim) ...

Jim and Catalin, thanks you, that you point us on important features for Collection Studio. We appreciate it. The research and development of the custom collectible is already started but we are not sure that this feature will be available in the next Collection Studio release - 2.48 (approx. start of June 2008). Even if it will be released, it will be just the first version of the functionality, and it may be not so really powerful for tracking fully custom collections. In any case, let’s see what we will have. Rome was not built in one day...

Peter, what type of fields do you need? Contact item (and all other types of items including your collectible) has 5 custom fields which you can use for your own (special) data.
